'SOMA'
Alla porta del vento s'offre la casa

Feature Film (71') by Giovanna Amarù, Italy 2016

“Because a poet comes here and he has to leave with a ripped, broken heart”. Thus the poet Ignazio Buttitta spoke with Sicilians, eternally and equally used to beauty and barbarity, to light as to blindness. Between document and testament, we danced and shot a litany of abandonment, at the border between a desolate factory and a dismissing theatre, in Bagheria ( from the Arab “Bab al Gerib”, “Door of the wind” in the subheading). How to live the wandering? SOMA describes this struggle on the fluid edge between construction and decay, land and sea, as we sense the boundary between body ( soma) and sign ( sèma).
That “limen” that is the membrane itself of existence, in which each of us determine his own lift and freedom. In the limbo between nature and culture as well, the geographical anatomies blend. As we offer and suffer our coming and going, the body is the only real place of our history. The watery wombs of Sicily cast the myth of Colapesce and the stories in which Tonino, Anikò, Antonio and Francesca swim. In which many swam, in a timeless flowing, as mirrored in a shattered mirror, as spoken in a thousand languages.
